every day in may (childhood memory)

today’s challenge is to tell a story from your childhood.. ‘Dig deep and try to be descriptive about what you remember and how you felt.’ i have a lot that come to mind actually! but being as it’s saturday, i’ll tell you about saturdays as a kid 🙂
i always loved the feeling of waking up on the weekend. i remember the warmth of the saturday morning sun splashing across my face in my upstairs bedroom, the smell of breakfast creeping up the stairs and luring me out of bed, a tall glass of orange juice always helped.
my mom would always request i go outside and pick up the paper off the front porch, with which i’d have to wrestle my internal desire to rip it open and find the funnies, leaving the rest of the paper in a heap on the table.
on this day i contain myself and as she finishes each section (she would read first), she passes it to me. i effortlessly pretend to find the preceding sections interesting, cocking my head while holding the local news section, nodding along with the sports articles, squinting my eyes with curiosity at the lifestyle columns.
i put on quite a hoax, but then.. finally.. what i’ve really been waiting for, on the back of the lifestyle section—the funnies!
without fail, i choose the boring ones first and slowly make my way to the ones i could understand: peanuts, garfield, blondie. i laugh out loud at these. repeated them back to my mom beaming with pride because i actually get the jokes, she must be oh so impressed. as i finish up with my funnies, i take another sip of my juice and run upstairs to throw on my bathing suit and run in the sprinklers because after all, it is my favorite day of the week. and indeed, my most memorable sort of saturday 🙂
do you have a favorite childhood memory?? 🙂
